The European Commission threatens Google and the most important Internet platforms

The European Commission has threatened action against major internet platforms such as Google, Twitter and Facebook, after new campaigns of spreading false information and attempted electoral fraud on the internet were noted during the recent European elections.

And the European Commissioner for Security, Julian King, announced in an interview with the German newspaper "Die Welt" to be published on Sunday, that the situation shows that it has become necessary to take additional measures by "the member states, but also by the platforms of Facebook, Google and Twitter."

So far, UNHCR has relied on the voluntary digital platform initiative to counter disinformation campaigns.

It now wants to determine whether it is necessary to adopt regulatory measures.

The topic of online manipulation will be on the agenda of the next summit of European Union heads of state, due in two weeks.

The European Commission and digital platforms have come up with a "code of conduct" related to online election campaigning.

In March, Facebook and Google introduced new transparency measures relating to which records of political ads can be viewed, and by requiring political advertisers to submit to an identification and audit measure.

But according to the Security Commissioner, all that was not enough during the European elections campaign in May.

In particular, the commissioner relies on a new report by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. He expressed his concern that new users on the Internet would exploit the lack of a legal framework in this area to try to influence the elections.
