to primary school children. The institute is located in Soweto, a suburb of Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, King Philip visited a new trading post, where he spoke to young professionals in the gem industry

and precious metals, one of the largest exports from South Africa to Belgium.

The discussion centered on building a more sustainable business model for the industry, and the king was given a tour of a new diamond polishing facility being built by the Belgian company Pluczenik and a South African businessman.

Then the King and Queen reunited for one of the most poignant moments of the trip: a visit to the Hector Petersen Museum in Soweto.

The facility is named after the 12-year-old boy who was shot and killed by apartheid police at the same location.

King Philip's first visit to South Africa

This visit is the first state visit by a Belgian monarch to South Africa and the first to any country on the African continent

Since 1979, when King Baudouin paid a state visit to Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire.

While this wouldn't be the first time that King Philip met current South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the latter was welcomed to the public at Laeken Castle in 2018.

Also, this is Queen Mathilde's second trip this month to the African continent, as she returned from a visit to Egypt earlier.
