Brazilian woman gives birth to twins with different parents
The 19-year-old mother of the two children said she took the paternity test because she wanted to confirm the identity of the father, noting that she collected DNA from the person she thought was the father, but after two tests, only one of the twins came back positive.
Then she remembered that she had sex with a different man on the same day and when the second person took a test, it showed that he was the father of the second child.
She confirmed that she was surprised by the test result, and that she did not know that this was possible, noting that the two children are now under her care and one of the parents without the other.
This phenomenon is scientifically called heterogeneous fertilization process.
The girl’s doctor, Tulio Jorge Franco, said that “it is possible that this will happen when two eggs are fertilized from the same mother by two different men, the children share the genetic material of the mother, but they grow in a different placenta,” stressing that “the case is one in a million.” He thinks he will see a similar case in his life.
Local media reported that the babies were now 16 months old, but Dr Franco only spoke about the issue this week.
