Do insects eat us?

A recent study showed consequences that scientists did not highlight in many previous research, which is that high temperatures stimulate the growth of insects, including harmful species that devour agricultural crops such as wheat, rice and corn.

Researchers from Washington State University concluded in a study published in the journal "Science" that the world will witness a decline in agricultural yield due to the physiological property of insects, which is that they eat larger quantities with higher temperatures.

In addition, in areas with moderate weather, the increase in temperature would contribute to the acceleration of insect reproduction, which leads to a cumulative effect of these two factors.

"The more insects there are, the more they eat," one of the study authors, Curtis Deutsch, professor of oceanography at the University of Washington, told AFP.

Europe and the United States, two of the largest grain-producing regions, will be hardest hit than tropical countries such as Brazil and Vietnam, where insects benefit most from climatic conditions, Deutsch says.

Assessing the additional agricultural losses is difficult, but the researchers attempted to do so by simulating the effect of a two-degree Celsius rise on the insects' metabolism and by calculating the resulting additional appetite.

This does not take into account the increase in the use of pesticides or other changes to avoid these harms.

The United States, France and China will do the most damage.
One of the invasive species of insects will also benefit, especially from this situation, and its scientific name is "Doravis nuxia".

This green aphid, which does not exceed a millimeter or two in length, was endemic to the United States in the eighties and is destructive of corn and barley crops.

"These insects, of which there are only females, give birth while they are pregnant with their young, and each of them is also pregnant with young," said Scott Merrill, an entomologist at the University of Vermont.

Each female can give birth to eight youngsters per day, each of which is pregnant. “The frequency of the reproduction of these insects can therefore be visualized,” as “one or two insects can give birth to billions of other insects if the best conditions are present.”
