Researchers have accurately identified some signs of deception, including that the common belief that liars usually avoid looking with their eyes while telling a lie is not always the case, according to the Daily Mail.

Here are the most important signs of deception among humans

Story details!

The study, conducted by experts from the Universities of Maastricht, Tilburg and Amsterdam, said storytelling details are key when separating lies from truth.

Experts also suggested focusing on a single cue to help identify lies coming from someone, such as the movement of the mouth or eyes.

This can include location factors, a person's behavior, or even the time of the event.

Other experts instead pointed to facial expressions as a clear sign of sincerity, with fake smiles only appearing "in the mouth" and not in the eyes.

Lie detection tests

Experts conducted nine separate tests on more than 1000 people to test their ability to detect lies.

This involved showing participants videos, data, scripts and live accounts of a scenario being told.

In the first test, 39 participants were confronted with both true and made-up statements describing the students' recent activities.

It also included accounts of walking around campus going to lockers and describing their thought process.

Detail control

Next, the participants had to rate each statement on a scale from "totally disingenuous" (100) to "totally real" (100+), examining the details of each account.

Instead, their simple rule of thumb is to monitor the amount of detail someone shares while telling a story.

Despite this, the study stated that detecting deception or lying was "extremely difficult" with participants having an accuracy rate of 59-79% overall.
