Symptoms and causes of speech disorder in children

Speech delay can be seen in a small number of children. A speech and language delay appears when a child does not develop speech and language at the expected rate. It is important to consult a doctor regarding delayed speech in children. But it must be taken into account that every child is unique, that is, the growth and development of the child varies from one to another. But it has recently been noticed that many children have a speech delay.

Only My Health consulted Dr. Prashant Muralwar, Consultant Pediatrician about symptoms, causes and tips for overcoming delayed speech in children, and posted an explanation of the causes, symptoms and tips to overcome the problem as follows:

By year 1, the child will respond by waving his hand, pointing or saying at least one word, eg papa, mama, tata, etc. During his second year, the child will obey orders and will bring things that are asked of him, and may show signs of objection to some things. However, sometimes these developments can be delayed, as sometimes, children will not smile at parents or not notice that they or one of them is in the room and may avoid noticing certain sounds and tend to play alone and not interested in toys or play with them for some time with more interest in playing with things at home.

Symptoms of delayed speech

Symptoms of speech and language delays can vary from child to child. But perhaps the parents will be intrigued when the baby says simple words like mama papa at 15 months old. After a short period of time, the baby will know words such as "no" or "I want" by about 18 months of age. In other cases, a one-year-old will speak a single word, such as “papa,” “mama,” and “tata,” and at two years old, a two-word sentence such as “give me this” and “I’d like to go out,” depending on the home accent of course, At the age of 3, the child will be able to form a sentence of 3 words such as “please give me”, “I do not want this”, etc.

But if signs of speech delay appear in the child for more months than that, then parents should consult a doctor because it may take a long time to say short sentences, but in cases of lack of utterance of words or the ability to form shorter sentences in a period of time close to the mentioned stages, it is necessary See a doctor to diagnose if there is a problem or it is just a natural delay, noting that it will take longer for children to read a simple poem or story, an ability that builds up by the age of 5 years.

The main symptoms of delayed speech in children are as follows:
• No babbling by 15 months of age
• Not talking about the age of two years
Inability to form short sentences at the age of 3 years
• Inability to follow instructions

poor pronunciation
Difficulty putting words into one sentence

Reasons for delayed speech

Some children can have speech problems when there is hearing loss, slow growth, intellectual disability, autism, “selective mutism” (the child’s unwillingness to speak), and cerebral palsy (a movement disorder caused by brain damage) .

The pediatrician will help identify the speech and language delay, by examining carefully and then referring it to a specialist if it does not occur at all. For example, if a child has a hearing problem, they are referred to an audiologist for a hearing test, and a treatment plan is then determined based on the basic diagnosis of the condition.

Tips for overcoming speech and language delays

In many cases, some children will start talking on their own, because after diagnosis and prompt treatment there will be better communication. The child will learn how to read lips. It remains that parents should not get angry or frustrated just because the child is not able to speak properly, but should not pressure the child and give him enough time to fully understand and support the situation.
