A Bitcoin hitman and a horrific crime thwarted

Italian police announced Wednesday that they had thwarted a "terrible" plan after arresting a man who wanted to immobilize his ex-fiancée and mutilate her with caustic acid by another man recruited for this purpose via the dark web.

The police described this plan as a "contemporary thriller", explaining that it was the "first time" that they had succeeded in thwarting a crime of this kind that had been planned online.

The man, a computer expert in his forties working for a large company, was placed under house arrest and charged with attempted grievous bodily harm and harassment.

The man planned the operation "to the smallest details", and was seeking to put his ex-fiancée paralyzed in a wheelchair, and had agreed to pay a "large amount" of cryptocurrency bitcoin to the man who recruited him and paid him an advance for this purpose, according to the police.

According to the Italian Press Agency (AGE), based on judicial documents, the hired man was to receive a sum of approximately ten thousand euros. The plan was to throw the caustic acid on the former fiancée's face without touching the eyes, in what would have been a burglary, according to the same source.

The Italian police indicated that they began investigating the matter in February, after they received a report via Interpol from police services in another European country, whose members had monitored suspicious conversations on the dark Internet.

In recent years, Italy has witnessed several highly publicized cases of violence against women, especially caustic acid attacks and murders committed by men against their current or former partners.

According to the National Institute of Statistics in Italy, based on the latest available figures, out of the 111 women who died in homicides in 2019, 55 were killed by their husband or partner, while 13 were killed by a former partner.
