"We don't know what these chemicals are, but we do know that tears contain ACTH, which is known to increase under stress," Dr. Frey says. Crying can be a way to cleanse the body of stress-causing chemicals.

3- Reduces manganese

4- It expels toxins

The eye's production of tears isn't just about preventing dehydration, because tears also contain lysozyme, which is an antibacterial and antiviral, and glucose, which nourishes cells on the surface of the eye and inside the eyelids.

5- It cleanses the nose

When we cry, the tears travel through the lacrimal duct into the nasal passages, where they encounter mucus. When the tears mix with enough mucus, it makes the mucus softer and easier to get rid of, keeping the nose free of bacteria, says psychiatrist Judith Orloff, author of Emotional Freedom.
