What happens to your body after days of lack of sleep?

Because of life circumstances sometimes, a person is forced to neglect his health and stress his body, but a new study showed that successive fatigue for a week causes problems even if what was missed is compensated after that period.

The study authors from Florida reported a "significant deterioration" in physical and mental health, which was more pronounced after three consecutive nights of poor sleep, according to the Daily Mail.

In detail, from a sample of nearly 2000 American adults who completed sleep data, experts found that symptoms rise after just one night of poor sleep, but peak after three nights.

Regarding mental health, participants reported accumulating feelings of anger, nervousness, loneliness, irritability and frustration as a result of lack of sleep.

The physical symptoms caused by the lack of sleep also included various aches and breathing problems.

Less than 6 hours to 8 nights

The team investigated the consequences of sleeping less than 6 hours for 8 consecutive nights, following a study by experts at the University of South Florida's School of Gerontology, based in Tampa.

They also report that 6 hours tends to be the minimum sleep duration recommended to support optimal health for adults, taking into account the difference between ages.

In turn, the senior author of the study, Sumi Lee, pointed out that many people believe that the lost sleep on weekends can be compensated for in exchange for increased productivity on weekdays, stressing that this is wrong, because the results of this study confirm that a lack of sleep for only one night can weaken significantly. Great daily performance.

Mental and physical problems

It is worth noting that the sample included 958 middle-aged adults, all of whom were in relatively good health and well educated, and provided daily data for eight consecutive days.

Of those, 42 percent experienced at least one night of poor sleep, and slept an hour and a half less than their usual routine, experts found, revealing that the biggest jump in mental and physical symptoms appeared after just one night of lack of sleep.

However, the number of mental and physical problems steadily worsened throughout the three-day period, peaking on the third day, indicating that at this point, the human body becomes relatively accustomed to frequent sleep loss, according to the team.

They also found that the severity of physical symptoms was at its worst after 6 days, as symptoms included upper respiratory problems, aches, digestive problems, and others.

While negative feelings and symptoms rose continuously throughout the consecutive days of poor sleep, as they did not return to basic levels until after sleeping at night for more than 6 hours.

They stress that once it becomes a norm to get less than six hours of sleep a night, it becomes increasingly difficult for your body to fully recover from the lack of sleep.
