What are the causes of stuffy nose and reduced sense of smell?

If you suffer from a permanently stuffy nose and lose the sense of smell and are exposed to frequent infections, this means that you may suffer from the presence of growths or “nasal polyps”.

They are soft, painless adenoids that grow in the lining of the nose or nasal passages and droop and occur as a result of chronic inflammation, and are associated with asthma, frequent infections, allergies or some immune disorders.
Small nasal growths may not cause symptoms, but larger growths can block nasal passages or lead to breathing problems, loss of sense of smell, and frequent infections.

Symptoms

The growths are accompanied by irritation and swelling of the lining of the nasal passages, which persists for more than 12 weeks (chronic sinusitis).

1- runny nose

2- Permanent blockage in the nose

3- Runny nose behind the nose

4- Decreased or lost sense of smell

5- Loss of sense of taste

6- Facial pain or headache

7- Pain in the upper teeth

8- A feeling of pressure on your forehead and face

9- snoring

10- Frequent nosebleeds

the reasons

The cause is unknown, but there is some evidence that people who develop nasal polyps have different immune system responses and different chemical markers within their mucous membranes than those who do not develop nasal polyps. Conditions related to this disease include:

1- Asthma.

2- Allergy to aspirin.

3- Allergic fungal sinusitis.

4- Cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that results in thick, abnormal fluids in the body, including thick mucus from the linings of the nose and sinuses

5- Vitamin D deficiency.

treatment

The goal of treating nasal polyps is to reduce their size or get rid of them completely. Medications are usually the first approach, such as corticosteroid nasal sprays, to reduce swelling and itching.

Sometimes, surgery may be required, but it may not offer the final solution; Because the growths reappear often again.
