It is the most common, especially in women, osteoporosis has multiple causes, but you can avoid them according to the latest studies by following the Mediterranean diet, which will reduce bone loss in people with osteoporosis.
The study was led by researchers at the British University of East Anglia, in cooperation with the Italian University of Bologna, and published their results in the latest issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The diet of the peoples bordering the Mediterranean is characterized by reliance on olive oil as a primary source of fat, in addition to eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts, eating fish and poultry at least twice a week, and limiting the intake of red meat. This diet is known as “ Mediterranean Diet.
To reach the results of the study, the team monitored 1142 participants in 5 medical centers in Italy, Britain, the Netherlands, Poland and France. The participants were suffering from osteoporosis, and their ages ranged between 65 and 79 years, and they were divided into two groups, the first ate the “Mediterranean diet”, while the second group ate its usual food.
The results revealed that the group that was keen to eat the "Mediterranean diet" had a reduced chance of bone loss, especially hip bones, within only 12 months of starting the diet. "This study is the first long-term clinical trial in Europe looking at the impact of the Mediterranean diet on bone health in older adults," said lead researcher Dr. Susan Fairweather Tait.
She added, "Patients with osteoporosis lose bone at a faster rate than others, so experience has proven that the Mediterranean diet can reduce bone loss naturally, rather than current drug treatments for osteoporosis, which can have severe side effects."
Previous studies had revealed that the “Mediterranean diet” could be useful in treating obesity and preventing diabetes, as well as reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide.
