Apple forced to change charging ports on its phones

Apple's chief marketing officer, Greg Joswiak, said the iPhone maker would need to comply with a European Union law to approve a USB-C charging port for phones.

Joswiak added that the company will comply as it always does with the laws, but he refused to specify a date for the adoption of the new iPhone charger port to replace the current type, Lightning, according to what was reported by “Bloomberg” and seen by “Al Arabiya.net.”

The Apple official noted that the company and the European Union had been at odds over the chargers for 10 years, citing a previous European Union request for Apple to adopt a Micro-USB port.

He explained that neither Lightning - the current iPhone charging port - nor the now ubiquitous USB-C would have been invented if that switch had occurred.

Earlier, reports from "Bloomberg", "Mac Roomer", and others said that Apple plans to switch the iPhone's charging port to USB-C next year.

This comes as the law enters into force in 2024.

Apple has already moved Macs, many iPads, and accessories to USB-C from Lightning and other connectors.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal conference, Joswick joined Snap's founder, Evan Spiegel, in rejecting the idea that a virtual world, known as metaverse, would be the future of computing.

Metaverse is "a word I would never use," Joswick said.

This came as Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg poured billions of dollars into this effort and went so far as to change the name of Facebook to Meta Platforms.
