Amal Alamuddin resigns from her position as Britain's envoy for media freedom

British lawyer of Lebanese origin, Amal Alamuddin Clooney, has submitted her resignation from her position as Britain's special envoy for media freedom, in protest of what she considered "the government's intention to violate international law."

Clooney attributed her resignation to Britain's intention to enact a law that would allow reversing some of the commitments included in the "Brexit" agreement reached last year, according to which Britain left the European Union.

The British government has drafted a bill that it says would violate its international legal obligations and undermine parts of the exit agreement it signed before it formally left the European Union last January.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the bill was necessary to counter "ridiculous" threats from Brussels, but it triggered resignations and threats of rebellion by members of Parliament, which appeared to be averted after a compromise was reached.

In a letter to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, Clooney said it was "regrettable that the United Kingdom has spoken of its intention to violate an international treaty signed by the Prime Minister less than a year ago."

"This raises the risk of encouraging authoritarian regimes that violate international law, with dire consequences throughout the world," she added in her letter.

It is known about Amal Alam El Din, the wife of American actor George Clooney, that she comes from a Lebanese family, from the Chouf in Mount Lebanon, who immigrated to Britain during the Lebanese Civil War, and had a star on the international scene in the field of human rights.
