The most important ways to prevent kidney stones
Preventing kidney stones means preventing the conditions that contribute to their formation
1- Drink a lot of water
Drinking 8 glasses of water (the capacity of the cup is 200 ml) to reach a urine volume of 2 liters per day, contributes to the dilation of urine, decreases the concentration of substances and reduces the formation of crystals.. Also, drinking juices containing citrates such as lemon juice and orange juice contributes to reducing the formation of stones.
2- Get an adequate daily requirement of calcium.
Reducing calcium will increase the level of oxalate..which contributes to the formation of kidney stones..adequate amount of calcium should be obtained according to age..the daily need is estimated at about 1000 mg, with an addition of 800 international units of vitamin D3 to help absorb calcium.
3- Reducing sodium (table salt)
As high levels of sodium increase the level of calcium in the urine, predisposing to stone formation.
Recent recommendations include a daily sodium intake that does not exceed 2300 mg (half a teaspoon) per day. If there is a proven history of the role of sodium in gallstone formation in the past, the daily intake should be reduced to 1500 mg per day (less than a third of a teaspoon) this will benefit your heart and reduce arterial pressure. .
4- Reducing the intake of animal proteins
Red meat, eggs, chicken and fish increase uric acid levels and form stones..They also contribute to reducing citrate levels in the urine (which prevent stones from forming)..If you have been exposed to stones previously, “animal protein should be reduced to about 100 grams per day”( half an ounce)
5- Avoid foods that increase gallstones.
Tea, chocolate and most nuts are rich in oxalates.. Soft drinks and cola are rich in phosphates.. If you suffer from kidney stones, your doctor will advise you to avoid or limit these foods.
