Researchers from Duke University in the United States recently revealed that chemicals used to make sofas incombustible may raise the incidence of thyroid cancer tumors to 74%.

The figures showed a huge jump in the number of thyroid cancer cases registered in Britain, for example, during the past decade only, by 74% over what it was in the past, which many experts and researchers in the United States attributed to the use of chemicals that protect furniture and home sofas from fire. .

After taking samples from the homes of many people with thyroid cancer who were included in the research, it was found that most of them had been exposed to a household chemical (Flame retardants), and in particular a certain type of it is (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers -PBDEs), a type that has been banned in general 2004, and another type that was banned 16 years ago, which is (TCEP). Researchers have long linked these two types to cancer because of the hormonal changes they cause.

It is worth noting that this type of chemical remains around the house for a long time, moving from one corner to another inside it through dust and enters the body through household food and hands, and it poses a great danger especially to children. Other than cancers, these harmful chemicals may cause learning difficulties in children, reduced sperm counts and many other reproductive problems.

Although orders and directives have been issued in several countries to prevent the circulation and use of this type of chemical, such as the United States of America, attempts to ban these substances have not yet succeeded completely. Experts hope that fire retardants will be completely banned within two years from now around the world, and they are usually used on sofas, carpets and mattresses.
