Scientists from Johns Hopkins University in the United States are conducting a new experiment to test the pulp of extracted teeth, taken from dental treatment centers, to examine the extent to which it can be used as a way to treat depression, according to the British “Daily Mail” published.

The new experiment is based on the hypothesis that master stem cells, which can grow into different types of specialized cells, in the pulp can help stimulate the formation of new neurons in the brain.

Increased production of neurons

Johns Hopkins University researchers believe that the more neurons there are, the better the connection between these cells and the areas of the brain responsible for emotions. Stem cells are also anti-inflammatory, and it is thought that depression could be linked to inflammation in the brain.

The experiment comes as a continuation of the breakthrough discovery, previously made, that antidepressants can stimulate stem cells in the brain to make more neurons.

Previous studies have found that the hippocampus, which is involved in memory and emotional processes in response to memories, is smaller in patients with chronic depression.

And some experts have suggested that a smaller hippocampus could explain why it takes longer for antidepressants to start working. They boost brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, but it can take a few weeks before they take effect, so it's possible that mood improves as new neurons grow and form new connections, a process that takes weeks.

Stimulating stem cell growth

Ongoing research at Johns Hopkins University has shown that antidepressants can stimulate the growth of stem cells in the brain. In the new trial, 48 people with depression will be given stem cells extracted from the pulp of other people's teeth, in addition to the antidepressant fluoxetine.

The cells are processed and cleaned before being injected into the patients' arms over four sessions, two weeks apart, bearing in mind that a comparison group only took fluoxetine daily.

Anti-inflammatories

Commenting on this approach, Carmine Pariant, Professor of Biological Psychiatry at King's College London, says: "In the short term, stress increases the production of chemicals in the body that help in the fight-or-flight response. For example, stress increases inflammation, which protects [the human] from infection. However, psychological and social stressors that cause depression, such as unemployment, marital difficulties, or bereavement, are usually long-term. In the long term, increased inflammation reduces the birth of new brain cells and communication between brain cells, which leads to depression.”

She adds that stem cells are also "anti-inflammatory", so in addition to creating new brain cells, they can reduce the inflammatory effects of stress on the brain. Stem cells are known to reach areas where there is inflammation, so they will find their way from the blood to the brain.
