According to the Arab News Agency, the Kosti Criminal Court in the White Nile State on June 26 (2022) sentenced the 20-year-old girl to death by stoning after convicting her of violating Article 146 (2) (adultery) of the Criminal Code, the Sudanese Penal Code 1991, Her lawyers applied to appeal the ruling, amid fears that it would be rejected.

This prompted the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) a few days ago to launch an online petition calling for a halt to the execution of the young woman.

It also stressed in a statement posted on its website that many irregularities occurred in that case, explaining that her trial began without an official complaint from the police in Kosti.

It also asserted that the girl was denied legal representation at one stage of the trial despite the representation guarantees stipulated in Article 135 (3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which stipulates the right of the defendant to legal representation in any criminal case punishable by 10 years imprisonment, or More or amputation and execution.

She pointed out that since the Criminal Court issued its decision, the authorities failed to refer the file to the Supreme Court for decision.

In addition, she considered that most of the provisions of adultery cases are issued in Sudan against women, which highlights the discriminatory application of legislation, in violation of international law that guarantees equality before the law and non-discrimination on the basis of jinn

On the other hand, and in the face of this confusion that surrounded the case, especially regarding the acceptance or rejection of the appeal request, the Sudanese lawyer, Intisar Abdullah, who is in charge of defending the girl, told Al Arabiya / Al Hadath categorically that the appeals court had upheld the death sentence by stoning.

She explained that she reviewed this morning, Sunday, the court, and that the case is still before the appeals judge, denouncing the rumors about the Supreme Court's support for the first ruling, describing it as malicious rumors.

It also indicated that the last judgment issued in that case was the judgment of the trial court or the Kosti court.

It is noteworthy that this initial verdict on the girl known by the nickname Amal, with the penalty of stoning after being convicted of adultery, caused a sensation last July.

Since its issuance, many organizations have been active to cancel it, stressing that it “violates the right to life and to a fair trial.”
