A team of international researchers has revealed that, on average, women and men spend a sixth of their lives grooming their appearance.

So what are the factors behind this intense interest in appearance?

The list of appearance care includes many steps, including: skin care, hair styling, applying makeup, exercising, undergoing cosmetic treatments, choosing clothes, all of which are details that women and men care about in order to feel better and more beautiful, as well as to enhance self-confidence.

This was confirmed by a study published in the scientific journal Evolution of Human Behavior, which revealed that the average modern person devotes about 4 hours a day to taking care of his external appearance.

Age-related interest:

The analysis of the researchers participating in this study focused on the behaviors adopted to improve the appearance (make-up, sports, beauty treatments, and fashion).

Their results showed that women spend about 4 hours a day on grooming, while men allocate 3,6 hours a day for this purpose.

While the age factor is an element responsible for the existence of differences in this area, women in their forties and fifties are the ones who allocate the least time to care for the look, while women at the age of 18 years spend about 63 minutes a day in caring for the look more than women who are 44 years old. But age is not the only difference in this regard. People who consider themselves attractive, people with a lower educational level, and those with higher socioeconomic status also spend more time on appearance.

Social networks and self-image

Social media plays an influential role in shaping the individual's personal image and the extent of acceptance of this image. The filters used to improve images and compare with others are among the factors that cause a decline in self-confidence, especially among women.

This fact was proven in a study published last February in Psychology of Popular Media, which revealed that limiting the use of social networks improves the self-image of women and men. This study also showed that people who spent more time on social networks and watching TV also devoted more time to their appearance.

It is noteworthy that researchers in this field had indicated that the media often sheds light on unrealistic, inaccessible physical images.

As for the use of filters available on social networks, it comes with the aim of improving the appearance, which generates many negative feelings and behaviors such as anxiety, depression, dissatisfaction with the external appearance, and even nutritional disorders.
