The team also found that 31% of the participants slept less than 7 hours a day, and more than 58% did not enjoy high quality sleep.
Short sleep duration and lower sleep efficiency were associated with increased levels of fat deposition in the kidneys and abdomen, and effects on cardiovascular health such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels.


For her part, lead researcher Dr. Elizabeth Feliciano said, “The amount and quality of sleep is one of the pillars of health alongside diet and physical activity,” noting that “pediatricians should be aware that poor sleep quality and frequent awakenings during the night are associated with increased sleep. A previous study also warned that children who get fewer hours of sleep than recommended for their age are more likely to be obese in old age.
The US National Sleep Foundation recommends that infants aged 4 to 11 months sleep 12-15 hours at night, and children from one to two years should get 11-14 hours of sleep at night.
Preschool children 3-5 years old should get 10-13 hours, and school-aged children 6-13 years old should get 9-11 hours.
It is recommended that adolescents aged 14-17 years get 8-10 hours of sleep a night.
