Leaning Tower of Pisa loses its tilt
The famous leaning tower of pisa has begun to return to its existing shape
The Tower of Pisa began to tilt since the beginning of its construction in 1173 on soft ground, and despite the passage of 8 centuries and 4 severe earthquakes, the famous tower is still steadfast and lofty.
Years of hard work for engineers resulted in the tower's stopping from tilting.
“We installed a number of underground tubes on the other side of the slope, we removed loads of soil by digging very carefully and thus recovered half a degree of inclination.”
In 1990 the authorities closed the tower for 11 years after its inclination reached 5,5 degrees.
The tower, at its maximum inclination, was 4,5 meters away from its vertical position.
The engineers' repairs succeeded in correcting the slope by 45 centimeters within 3 decades.
The tower returns to its existing shape, and its tilt contrasts in the summer because the tower tends to the south, and for this reason its southern side is getting hotter, and therefore the tower’s stones expand and the tower straightens.
Experts confirm that the tower will never return to its existing shape.
