Peña Nieto ended his six-year term in office in November. Peña Nieto married former TV actress Rivera in 2010 in a glamorous ceremony while he was state governor and aspiring to the presidency. This was the second marriage for both of them, and they both have children from previous relationships.

Rumors of an impending separation dogged the couple and increased during the final year of Peña Nieto's presidency, although those close to the family, including Rivera's daughters, dismissed the allegations as false.

Rivera, 49, said on her account: “I deeply regret this dire situation for me and my children. Today all my energy, strength and love is focused on remaining a good mother, and getting my life back and my career back.”

About a week ago, a Mexican social magazine published pictures of Peña Nieto in Spain with a young Mexican model, fueling speculation that the couple might separate.

Peña Nieto, 52, left power with record low approval ratings due to rampant crime, corruption scandals and a stagnant economy. His appearance has declined since he left the presidency.
