The effect of cholesterol-lowering drugs on corona

In a step that may make a difference between life and death for people infected with the Corona virus, a new study has given hope again to reduce the results of this epidemic that has occupied the world, as a new study revealed that cholesterol-lowering drugs may reduce the dangerous symptoms of infection with the virus, and thus reduce the deaths resulting from it.

And researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, explained that patients who take “statin” drugs have a 41% lower risk of death in hospital due to the virus, according to a study published in the “Plos One” medical journal.

The initial study included 170 anonymous medical records from patients receiving care at the University of California.

The research team at the University of California, San Diego, applied their original findings using data from the American Heart Association's Cardiovascular Registry, to a group of more than 10 HIV-positive patients across the United States.

Specifically, the researchers analyzed the anonymous medical records of 10 patients who contracted the virus over a 541-month period, from January to September 9, in 2020 different hospitals.

They found that the use of statins before hospitalization due to corona led to a more than 50 percent reduction in the risk of severe infection.

Statistical matching techniques were also used to compare the outcomes of patients who had used statins or anti-hypertensive drugs with similar patients who had not.

For her part, Laurie Daniels, professor and director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at the University of California, the lead researcher of the study, said that when confronting the virus at the beginning of the pandemic, there was a lot of speculation about some drugs that affect (ACE2) receptors in the body, which are important to the virus. To enter human cells, including statins.

She added that researchers and scientists thought at the time that statins might prevent virus infection through their known anti-inflammatory effects and binding capabilities, which could stop the development of the virus.

Statin is commonly used to lower cholesterol levels by blocking liver enzymes responsible for cholesterol formation.

They are widely prescribed, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 93% of patients who take a cholesterol-lowering drug use a statin.
