Several hundred people marched from the Parliamentary District to the Senate of Canada, then took Sussex Drive towards the US Embassy.

The Ottawa demonstration came after the death of George Floyd during his arrest in the US city of Minneapolis. Floyd died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes while he was handcuffed on a Minneapolis street on May 25.

On the other hand, thousands of people were reported to have taken to the streets in downtown Toronto to protest against racism.

The demonstration, dubbed the "I Can't Breathe Toronto March", began at noon on Friday, and anti-racism demonstrators marched in large groups towards Nathan Phillips Square in Canada's largest city.

This slogan refers to Floyd's repeated appeal to the police officer before his death.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders was present at Friday's protest rally. He knelt with a number of other officers in a street to show solidarity with the demonstrators.

Rallies of similar themes have also taken place in other Canadian cities including Vancouver, according to local media reports.
