None of the participants had dementia at the beginning of the decade-long study, and 37% took vitamin D supplements, and it was found that they were 40% less likely to develop dementia and cognitive decline, according to the Daily Mail.

Professor Zahinour Ismail, from the Universities of Exeter and Calgary, Canada, who participated in the study, said: Vitamin “D” has some effects that can reduce dementia and cognitive decline in the elderly.

Dr Byron Criss, of the University of Exeter, said: Preventing dementia or even delaying its onset is very important given the growing numbers of people affected.

Huge benefits for women

While the benefits of supplementation were seen across both sexes, the positive effects were greater among women and people with normal cognition, compared to those who reported signs of mild cognitive impairment and changes in cognition that have been linked to an increased risk of dementia.

Experts believe that the greater positive effects among women may be due to lower levels of estrogen, which is associated with vitamin D activation during menopause.

It is worth noting that the body makes vitamin “D” naturally, when the skin absorbs direct sunlight while outdoors, but nutritional supplementation of vitamin “D” is very important and necessary, especially for the elderly, especially in the winter, as this vitamin reduces A symptom of aging in the elderly.
