And yesterday, hopes for a widely available and “inexpensive” treatment for Covid 19 were boosted, with British researchers announcing that the steroid drug “Dexamethasone” was able to save the lives of a third of patients with more severe symptoms.

Researchers led by a team from Oxford University tested the drug on more than 19 severely ill Covid-XNUMX patients, and Peter Horby, Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases in the Oxford University Department of Medicine, said, “Dexamethasone is the first drug to show an improvement in survival in patients with the virus. This is a very good result.”

He added that "dexamethasone is inexpensive, sold without a prescription and can be used immediately to save lives worldwide."

In its statement, the World Health Organization said that "the researchers briefed her on the preliminary information about the results of the experiment, and we very much hope to know the full analysis of the data in the coming days."

In addition, it indicated that it would conduct a “post-analysis” of this research to update its guidelines “to reflect how and when the drug should be used” to treat Covid-19 patients.

200 thousand doses ready

For his part, the British Minister of Health, Matt Hancock, announced, yesterday, Tuesday, that Britain will immediately begin prescribing the “dexamethasone” stimulant for Covid-19 patients, stressing that his country has started stockpiling the widely available drug since the first indications of its effectiveness appeared 3 months ago. "Since we noticed the first indications of dexamethasone's potential, we have been stockpiling it since March," he said.

"We now have 200 doses ready for use and are working with the NHS to include the usual treatment for Covid-19, dexamethasone, as of this afternoon," he added.

It is noteworthy that the new Corona virus has killed at least 438 people around the world since it appeared in China in December, according to a census conducted by Agence France-Presse based on official sources at 250:19,00 GMT Tuesday.
