A devastating earthquake hits Mexico and a great deal of tsunami fear

An earthquake measuring 7,5 on the Richter scale struck southern Mexico on Tuesday morning, according to a report National Earthquake Monitoring Center, followed by a tsunami warning (tsunami waves caused by an earthquake) in Central America.

The warning, issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, covers a radius of 7,4 km around the epicenter of the earthquake that occurred in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, with a magnitude of XNUMX, according to the American Institute of Geophysics.

The earthquake comes at the height of the COVID-19 crisis caused by the coronavirus. According to media reports, a large number of residents of the Mexican capital were not allowed to wear masks when they rushed out of their homes.

"We don't yet have any information on recording possible damage," said David Leon, a civil defense official in Mexico who contacted President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, according to the Milenio newspaper.

The last strong earthquake in Mexico dates back to September 2017. It struck Mexico and the neighboring states of Murillo and Puebla, killing 370 people.

On September 19, 1985, an 8,1-magnitude earthquake struck the Mexican capital, leaving more than ten thousand people dead and destroying hundreds of buildings. Its epicenter was located on the Pacific coast and was considered one of the most severe earthquakes in the country's history.
