Drinking coffee in the morning is not the best option

Morning coffee is a ritual that many people practice, but is it too early to drink it in the morning? Brewing a cup of coffee as soon as you wake up may not give you the biggest boost of energy all day, according to sleep experts.

A specialist in what is known as “sleep science” says that drinking coffee first thing in the morning may not be the best option.

Dr. Deborah Lee, a doctor based in Britain, adds to Fox News: “When you wake up, the level of the stress hormone (cortisol), which promotes alertness and concentration and regulates metabolism and immune system response, is at its peak.”

She explains: “High levels of cortisol may affect your immune system, and if they are already at their peak when you wake up, drinking coffee as soon as you open your eyes may do more harm than good, and may make you immune to caffeine for a long time.”

She added that cortisol “follows a rhythm specific to your sleep cycle, as it reaches its peak within 30 to 45 minutes of waking up and then decreases slowly throughout the day, and this explains why you reach peak activity in the morning and feel more tired at night.”

Lee suggests that the best time to drink coffee and get a caffeine fix is at least 45 minutes before waking up, when “the cortisol rhythm starts to decrease.”

“The best time to drink coffee is usually mid- to late-morning, when your cortisol level drops and you start to feel low on energy,” she said.

However, she continues: “But of course not too late in the afternoon, as this may affect the quality of your sleep.”

According to me, it is best for someone who wakes up at around 7 a.m. to wait until 10 a.m. or around noon to have their first cup of coffee... when your body and mind will appreciate it the most, and you will get the most benefits of caffeine.”
