Treatment to get rid of hot flashes in women

In good news for women, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, on Friday, a new type of medication for women suffering from uncomfortable hot flashes caused by menopause.

The administration authorized the use of a once-daily pill made by the pharmaceutical company (Astelas Pharma) to treat moderate to severe symptoms, which can include sweating, flushing and chills.

The treatment targets the brain

The new drug takes a novel approach, targeting brain connections that help control body temperature.

And the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement that the drug will provide “an additional safe and effective treatment option for women,” noting that more than 80% of women suffer from hot flashes during menopause, as the body gradually produces lower levels of reproductive hormones between the ages of 45 and 55.

The most common treatment consists of hormonal pills aimed at increasing estrogen and progestin levels, but the treatment is not suitable for some women, particularly those with a history of stroke, blood clots, heart attacks and other health conditions.

Large studies have concluded that hormones can increase the chances of these problems recurring, although the risks vary based on a number of individual factors.

Non-hormonal treatment

The new pills aren't hormonal, but they do carry a warning from the Food and Drug Administration about possible liver damage. Women then have to be screened for liver damage or infection before getting a prescription, and then have a blood test every three months for nine months to monitor for safety issues. , as recommended by the Food and Drug Administration.

The drug will cost $550 for one month, Astellas said, and that is the price before insurance coverage and other deductibles typically negotiated by insurers and pharmacy benefit managers.
