Unexpected signs that the child is gifted

Many parents often think about whether their children are gifted. According to what was published by the American network “CNBC”, most gifted children can learn information, acquire skills, and process them faster than other children at the same age, and they can understand academic subjects at different levels higher than the rest of their peers.

However, gifted children are not always well-behaved and distinguished. In fact, neuroscience experts say that giftedness appears different in every child, especially since there are unexpected signs that indicate that the child is highly gifted, as follows:

1. Asynchronous development
If a smart child struggles with simple tasks like tying a shoelace or remembering to brush his teeth, these are just a few examples of asynchronous development — or developing more quickly in some areas than others. It is common for gifted children.

A gifted 8-year-old could be at the same reading skill level as a seventh grader, and have the distinction in mathematical ability of a fifth grader, but his social skills could be at his grade level, and the emotional regulation of a much younger student.

2. Emotional depth and sensitivity at an early age
Neuroscientists suggest that gifted children experience more intense emotional reactions to the world around them. For example, they may find it difficult to enjoy shows in which a character is hurt or sad. Many also have a strong sense of justice and can feel frustrated and disappointed when they feel a situation is wrong. Due to their asynchronous development, they may not yet have the emotional regulation skills to deal with those big emotions.

3. Existential curiosity
Gifted children often have an insatiable curiosity, especially about the existential aspects of life. A gifted child can be more concerned about issues such as death, poverty, climate change and injustice than their peers. They can ask a barrage of questions about the nature of society just by watching a children's movie or book that deals with bullying, for example. Parents can be surprised by questions ranging from, “What happens when we die?” to “Why do bad things happen in the world?”
