Blindness to face recognition... its symptoms and causes

Prosopagnosia is a brain disorder that causes the inability to recognize or distinguish faces. Face-blind people may struggle to notice differences in strangers' faces, and others may even have difficulty recognizing familiar faces. It is estimated to affect about 2% of the general population.

Symptoms of facial blindness

The most common sign of prosopagnosia is the inability to recognize faces, or to distinguish between them, and this can make forming relationships more difficult, both in a personal and professional setting. It can be very difficult for people with face blindness to identify a person who appears in a different shape or context than the one they are accustomed to. People with only mild facetightness may have an inability to identify or distinguish the faces of strangers, or people they don't know well. Those with moderate to severe facial blindness may struggle to recognize the faces of people they see regularly, including family members and close friends. In very severe cases, people with facial blindness may not recognize their faces, and this may cause social anxiety or depression. And if you suffer from face blindness, you will not forget a few faces now and then, and it will be a persistent, recurring problem that does not go away. If your child has face blindness, he may:

1- He waits for you to wave to him when you come to pick him up from school, or something happens.

2- He approaches strangers who he thinks are you, or someone he knows when he is supposed to go to a certain person.

3- Does not recognize familiar people, such as neighbours, relatives, or family members, especially when you see them differently.

4. Becomes clingy or introverted in public.

5- He has difficulty keeping track of character drawings in movies or TV shows.

6- He has difficulty making friends. He appears introverted at school, but reassuring at home.

7- These symptoms can be attributed to other conditions, such as shyness.

Causes of facial blindness

Prosopagnosia is thought to result from abnormalities, dislocations, or damage to a fold (or fold) in the brain called the right fusiform gyrus. This area of the brain plays an important role in coordinating the neural systems that influence facial recognition and memory.

This condition can result from a stroke, injury to the brain, or some neurodegenerative diseases. In some cases, people can be born with prosopagnosia as a congenital disorder. In these cases there appears to be a genetic link as it runs in families. Prosopagnosia is not always a standard symptom of autism, but it appears to be more common in people with autism than in the general population.

Understandably, facial blindness may be a part of what causes poor social development in people with autism.

It is important to note that this condition is not caused by poor eyesight, learning difficulties, or memory loss, as it is a specific problem in recognizing faces, unlike the memory problem which is the failure to remember a person.
