A dog implicates an Uber and costs it ridiculous amounts

A dog costs Uber insane sums, in the story of the blind woman who lives in San Francisco, who was able to get $1.1 million in compensation from Uber, 3 years after filing a lawsuit against her.

A dog implicates an Uber and costs it ridiculous amounts

The story began after the woman filed a lawsuit against the giant Uber company in 2018, in which she said that the company's drivers prevented her from riding with them 14 times.

The dog is the basis of the story

She added that the drivers were either refraining from helping her or harassing her due to their unwillingness to transport her dog, which she used as a guide, with her, explaining that one day, as a result of their behavior, she was left stuck late at night, which made her late for work, which led to her eventual expulsion.

Irving also alleged that drivers twice intimidated and verbally abused her, and said their discriminatory behavior persisted despite her filing complaints with Uber.

In a statement, Catherine Caballo, one of Irving's attorneys, considered it essential that, under US law, a guide dog for people with disabilities should be able to go anywhere a blind person can go.

“We are not responsible”

Although the company initially refused to pay, considering that it was not responsible for the behavior of its drivers, it later decided to provide the woman with an amount of $ 1.1 million, according to what was reported by the British newspaper, The Guardian.

Reportedly, Uber said it never agreed with this court decision.

"We are proud that Uber's technology has helped blind people locate and ride, our drivers are expected to provide services to riders with their animals, comply with accessibility laws and more, and we regularly instruct drivers on this responsibility," she said in a statement.

An Uber spokesperson said in a statement to the Guardian, that the company's team is dedicated to its work, and considers every complaint submitted to it to take appropriate action.

What does the law say?

It is worth noting that the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits transportation companies governed by this law from refusing to transport people with special needs with guide dogs.

On this basis, the court decided, according to the report, that Uber was responsible for violations of the anti-corruption law due to its oversight of contracts provided with its drivers and its failure to monitor the matter and prevent discrimination by properly training workers.
