Backstage dress at the Coronation of King Charles

King Charles III is expected to appear During his coronation ceremony tomorrow, Saturday, with a look previously adopted by his predecessors, such as his grandfather, King George VI, at his coronation in 1937, and his great-grandfather, King George V, in 1911. Learn about the details below.

State dress:

This garment takes the form of a long “cap” embroidered with velvet, which the king will wear upon his arrival at Westminster Abbey. As for the lining of this gown and the lace that adorns it, they were kept by Ede and Ravenscroft, the oldest London tailors who made the costumes for all coronations since King Guillaume III and Queen Mary II in 1689.

The white shirt:

King Charles is expected to wear a simple white linen shirt during his anointing ceremony with chrism and holy oil.

– “Columbium Sindones” robe:

It is worn by the king after being anointed with oil and takes the form of a white “tunic” without a sleeve, attached to a simple collar with a single button. It was previously worn by King George VI.

– “Supertonica” coat:

It is a bright golden robe with long sleeves, similar to the clothes of priests, and it is worn after anointing with oil. It was previously worn by King George VI and adopted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It weighs about two kilograms and has not undergone any modifications since the medieval era, and its silk fabric is decorated with delicate gold medallions.

Coronation belt:

It dates back to 1937 and is made of gold embroidered fabric. This belt is placed on the king’s waist above the “Supertonica” and its golden buckle is adorned with national symbols. It is also provided with a place to hang the “Sacrament Sword” that is supposed to protect good and punish evil.

- Royal Mashallah:

It is a thin and long embroidered silk scarf that the king places on his shoulders. It is similar to the one usually worn by priests and bishops.

Imperial coat:

It is the most prominent coronation costume after “Supertonica.” It takes the form of a long coat worn over it. It was designed for the coronation of King George IV in 1821, and will be the oldest piece ever used at that ceremony. It was made of golden fabric woven with colored threads and could be closed at the chest with a golden clasp representing an eagle. It weighs between 3 and 4 kilograms, and it is decorated with decorations in the form of red roses, blue thorns, green clovers, lilies and eagles, and it is expected that Crown Prince William will help his father wear this coat.

Coronation gauntlet:

King Charles III will wear a single gauntlet of white leather in the right hand in which he will hold the scepter and crucifix during the ceremony. This glove was executed for King George VI, and it is decorated with national symbols such as roses, clover, thistles, and acorns, which were executed with golden threads.

Ceremonial dress:

It is worn when leaving Westminster Abbey, and it bears more special touches than the state dress, which is restricted to the interior of the church. The new monarch will wear the ceremonial attire previously worn by King George VI, made of violet silk velvet embroidered with gold.
