Dr. Wilson noted that some of the key activities recommended by patients seeking to prevent cognitive decline and exercise the mind include reading because it forces thinking outside of everyday tasks, and promotes multitasking and building connections.

Other useful activities to keep the mind sharp include crossword puzzles, card games, and arts and crafts, all of which stimulate the brain and give it a great workout.

4. Nourishing mental and physical contact

Dr. Wilson explained that activities such as yoga and meditation calm the patient and create opportunities to interact with others, noting that they are particularly useful activities for Alzheimer's patients who want to stimulate their brains.

While social connections and interactive activities are especially important, having a friend or someone to talk to also stimulates positive emotions and helps with memory, focus and attention, due to speech and language itself.
