  2. International companies of national originIncreasing openness and trade by collectively reducing trade barriers, reconsidering barriers to capital movement within the region, and removing restrictions on the movement of highly skilled workers, freeing talent pools for leading local firms
  3. Sectors and industries based on innovationAdopting the rise of automation and digitization, strengthening research and development systems, and providing the best possible environment for entrepreneurship

  7. Governments focus on performance and achievementEncouraging governments to issue annual reports to enhance their effectiveness and accountability

The report delves into all these topics, and highlights specific ideas and implementation mechanisms.

“Everyone is quick to point out the challenges that young people in our region face,” says Ghassan Al-Kebsi, Middle East managing partner for McKinsey. While those challenges are real, the defeatist tone on which these conversations are based is most worrisome, hinting that there is no point in trying. We see those challenges too, but we believe there are amazing opportunities. The young people here are just as talented as their peers anywhere in the world. We believe in them and believe in their potential. We are committed to helping achieve a bright future, and we hope to create even more optimism about the future.”

Khaled Al-Jahraish, who co-authored the report, says: “When I was younger, the opportunities available to young people that would help them achieve a better economic future in the region were few and far between, especially for those young people who lived in low-income areas. I was one of the lucky ones who got the chance to cross into a bright future. Although many countries in the region are witnessing amazing transformations today in terms of public and private initiatives, which contribute to expanding economic opportunities for young people, there is still much work to be done in this regard. We hope that our ideas in this report will help enhance the positive impact of the ongoing initiatives, and contribute to creating a better future for a broad segment of youth.”
