Do not wash your face more than twice a day

Washing the face every day in the morning is considered a daily routine for many people. It is one of the important ways to maintain healthy skin. It is also necessary for personal hygiene, especially for women who love cosmetics. But how often should this be done?

In this regard, Stephanie Saxton Daniels, a board-certified dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology Hospital, explained that there is no doubt that washing the face can be beneficial, as it plays an important role in removing dirt, oils, dead skin cells, makeup, and substances that clog pores and glands. But she added: "If you've washed your face the night before, do you really need to do it again a few hours later?"

She continued, “Washing your face too much can, in some cases, disrupt the skin microbiome and exacerbate skin diseases such as dermatitis around the mouth or sensitive skin.”

She emphasized that for most people, simply cleaning the face before bed should be enough.

Twice for those with oily skin

In turn, Caroline Stoll, a dermatologist, said that when it comes to the number of times a person should clean his skin, there is no one answer that fits everyone, and it depends on skin types, according to what was reported by the “Health” website.

She explained that for some people, especially those who suffer from acne or have oily skin, washing the face twice a day may be beneficial, as washing the face in the morning can help remove oils and dead skin cells, which can clog pores.

She said it's also a good way to get rid of leftover skin care products, including wax and heavy oils.

Also, getting rid of these dirt, skin oils, etc. in the morning reduces the possibility of clogged pores and rashes, said Stacey Toll, MD, MPH, dermatological surgeon. It can also prevent the buildup of skin cells that can lead to a dull or unhealthy appearance, she said.

Although cleansing your face in the morning can improve skin health for some people, it is not necessary for everyone.

Water without detergent

If a person wants to try cutting back on their face-washing routine, spritzing their face with water after waking up may be a good option, Stoll recommends.

In particular, she said: “For those with sensitive or dry skin, using water without a cleanser in the morning may be sufficient and will not remove any of the protective lipids that help support your skin barrier.”

She also added, “For people with oily skin or those looking to remove product or residue from the night before, cleansing with micellar water in the morning can be beneficial.”

Other options to consider include hydrating mist, toner, or pre-moistened facial wipes, which can quickly and easily refresh skin without the need for a full wash.

When building a skincare routine, there are several things you should take into consideration:

skin type

Determine your skin type to choose products that meet your needs. Dry, oily, combination, and sensitive skin types may require different products and ingredients.

cleaning

Some people may prefer a gentle morning cleanser, while others may use alternatives such as wet wipes or water.

Sun cream

Apply sunscreen in the morning to help protect your skin from harmful UV rays, prevent premature aging, and reduce your risk of skin cancer. Look for sunscreens that provide broad spectrum coverage with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Treatments

Consider using specific serums or treatments like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide serums, which can target specific skin issues like fine lines, discoloration, and hyperpigmentation.
