Long-term memory is handled by parts of the brain that are evolutionarily very old.
The more primitive the sensory impulse, the easier it is to transfer it into long-term memory. Faces are a more ancient form of identity than names.
Our brains have developed a particular sensitivity to the subtle differences in the human face because it is a very useful marker point – elevated, forward facing, undisturbed by the extremities, and often unspoiled.
Remembering shoulders or belly buttons is much more difficult. Names are getting more and more difficult because the language processing part of the brain is a very recent addition.
