Leonardo DiCaprio donates $XNUMX million to Amazon

The Legacy Alliance Foundation, the Earth Alliance, was set up last month by DiCaprio with Lauren Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth.

The alliance is also seeking donations to help restore the Brazilian rainforest, which are called the "lungs of the planet".

Brazilian federal experts have reported a record number of wildfires across the country this year, an 84 percent increase over the same period in 2018.

The money will be distributed to five local groups working to combat the problem.

The Amazon forest fires have received wide attention and interaction in recent days, and state leaders have entered the line, in an effort to pressure the right-wing President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who does not pay much attention to climate change.

One of the enormity of what is happening in the Amazon is that these forests are spread across 8 countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and French Guiana.

French President Emmanuel Macron recently warned that these forests produce 20 percent of the oxygen on the planet, and therefore, it is the “earth’s oxygen” that burns, and it is not just a simple fire.

And between last January and August, the Amazon rainforest recorded 72 fires throughout the entire Brazilian territory.

As for the total number of fires that broke out in the Amazon forest inside Brazil, during the past year, it reached 40, which is a worrying number, according to activists, environmental experts and international bodies.

A report issued by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research revealed that the proportion of fires increased by 83 percent within the forests of the Latin country, and therefore, smoke from the fires can be seen from space, even if the observation is from a distance of 400 miles.
