After his country qualified for the FIFA World Cup final, following its 2-0 victory over Morocco, French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated the Moroccan national team on its "beautiful journey" in the World Cup in Qatar.

"To our Moroccan friends (...) you left a footprint in the history of football," he said in a tweet attached to a photo of Moroccan player Ashraf Hakimi and Frenchman Killian Imbabé, via his official Twitter account.

Before the start of the FIFA World Cup semi-final match in Doha, in which the French and Moroccan national teams faced each other, the French president stressed the need for "respect and friendship" between France and Morocco.

"We are all behind the French national team for victory," wrote Macron, who traveled to Doha on Wednesday to watch the match, adding, "Without ever forgetting that sport brings us together above all with the respect and friendship between our two nations."

France will be happy after becoming the first team to reach the World Cup final twice in a row since Brazil did it in 2002, and now it will think in front of Argentina, and captain Lionel Messi, on Sunday, to become the third team to retain the title after Brazil in 1962 and Italy in 1938.
