Associate Professor in the Computational, Cognitive and Clinical Neuroimaging Laboratory at Imperial College London and lead researcher Adam Hampshire, said he and his team analyzed data on more than 81 participants who completed the IQ test between January and December 2020.

He explained that more than 12 thousand people from the entire sample were infected with the Corona virus with varying degrees of severity.

The researchers found that those who contracted the virus performed poorly on an intelligence test compared to those who did not contract the virus.

The researchers also said the biggest deficiencies were noted in tasks that require thinking, planning, and problem-solving.

The level of cognitive impairment was also correlated with the level of disease severity, with those who were hospitalized with a ventilator showing the greatest impairments.

The noticeable disability of Corona patients who were placed on a ventilator is equivalent to a decrease of 7 points in IQ.

The researchers indicated that they do not know the mechanistic basis or the link between the injury and the low level of cognition, pointing out that they also do not know how long the effect may last.
