What is breast cancer...and its ten most important symptoms
Cancer occurs when changes called mutations occur in genes that regulate cell growth. Mutations allow cells to divide and multiply in an uncontrolled manner. Breast cancer is cancer that develops in the cells of the breast. Usually, cancer forms in either the lobules or ducts of the breast.
Symptoms of breast cancer in women:
Breast cancer may not cause any symptoms in its early stages. In many cases, the tumor may be too small to be felt, but the abnormality can still be seen on a mammogram. If a lump can be felt, the first sign is usually a new breast lump that was not there before . However, not all lumps are cancerous.
Each type of breast cancer can cause a variety of symptoms. Many of these symptoms are similar, but some may be different.
Symptoms of the most common breast cancers include:
- A breast lump or thickening of tissue that looks different from the surrounding tissue and is new
- breast pain
- Breast skin is red or discolored
- Swelling in all or part of your breast
- Discharge from the nipple other than breast milk
- bloody nipple discharge
- Peeling of the skin on the nipple or breast
- Sudden and unexplained change in the shape or size of your breast
- inverted nipple
- A lump or swelling under your arm
