There is no doubt that no one likes to be sad, so why do we often like to listen to sad songs and choose them despite the presence of many happy songs?

It seems that the answer was provided by new research, revealing that the matter is not related to sad songs, but rather to many reasons, most of which are related to positive feelings, which is very beneficial for intellectual and mental health.

A new experiment conducted by Yale University philosopher and experimental psychologist, Dr. Joshua Knope, reveals that we crave sad songs because they help us feel connected and not isolated.

The results indicated that the emotions that made the listeners in the experiment feel more connected to the conversation were deeply rooted in “what the music is about” such as love, joy, euphoria, loneliness, sadness, and grief.

"You just feel lonely, you feel isolated," Dr. Knope explained. "And then there's this experience where you listen to some music... and you feel like you're not alone," he said, according to the Telegraph.

A feeling of joy

A previous study had revealed that people who listen to sad songs do not do so to increase their misery.

Instead, sad songs help them feel more cheerful, according to a report in the journal Emotion, which is published by the American Psychological Association.

For their part, psychologists said that one of the reasons people prefer sad songs is because they resonate with what the individual is going through. Girish Chandran, a professional at MNC, added that he listens to sad songs because they comfort him, according to the “deccanherald” website.

In parallel, research from various studies has found that our preference for songs that are moody and sad because they may act as a mood stabilizer, emotional support, and even catharsis, are often reflective, emotionally invested, and soul-searching lyrics.

Mood boosting

Sad music also provides us with an outlet for our feelings, but it is generally necessary and positive, and it is necessary for healthy emotional behavior, according to the “lifehack” website.

For years, science has provided evidence that crying can be a great way to provide relief and boost a positive mood, and sad music can facilitate the kind of emotional journey that allows you to let go of everything and feel better as a result.

Finally, sad music can develop strong emotional bonds with us even when we're not feeling particularly sad.
