What are superbugs and what are the ways to prevent them?

"Superbugs" is a term used to describe strains of bacteria that are resistant to the majority of antibiotics in common use today. Resistant bacteria that cause pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and skin infections are just a few of the risks we face now.

Antibiotic resistance is a naturally occurring phenomenon that can be slowed, but not stopped. Over time, the bacteria adapt to drugs designed to kill them and change to ensure their survival. This makes previous standard treatments for bacterial infections less effective and, in some cases, ineffective.

Certain actions may speed up the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as:

Use or misuse of antibiotics

Having poor infection control

Living or working in unsanitary conditions

poor eating

To protect yourself from harmful bacteria, wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating a proper diet, eating the right food, getting enough exercise and establishing good sleep patterns, can reduce the risk of disease.

You can also help fight antibiotic resistance by:

Use antibiotics as directed and only when needed

Complete the full course of treatment, even if you feel better

Never share antibiotics with others.
