Meta announced the closure of the instant messaging application “Messenger Lite” in the Android system, saying that the application will not be available for use after the eighteenth of next September.

The company had revealed the application at the end of 2016 as a reduced version of the main Messenger application, to work on Android devices with low specifications.

Users of the “Messenger Lite” application notice that a message appears when the application is launched encouraging the transition to the full version of Messenger, and indicates that the Lite version will soon be discontinued during the month of September.

The company stressed that the decision to close the application will not have an impact on the conversations, as it will remain saved and available in Messenger.

It is no longer available for download

The Messenger Lite application is no longer available for download to new users via the Google Play Store, but previous users can download it until it is removed from the store.

The announced application enjoys a large popular base due to its simple design and interface that provides basic features for communication, as well as other characteristics such as its small size and need for small storage space, working efficiently on low-spec devices while reducing data consumption and allowing communication even in the presence of a weak or unstable connection. the internet.

However, the app is missing many features available in the full version of Messenger, including the night mode.

The reasons are unknown

Meta did not reveal the reasons that prompted it to close the famous application, but press reports indicate that the improvement of mobile device specifications over recent years is a major reason behind the company's decision.

It is worth noting that the Facebook Lite application is still available, and the company has not mentioned its closure in the current period.

Meta had also announced earlier to end support for SMS text messages in the Messenger application.
