Does breast cancer treatment need chemotherapy doses?

Some say yes and others do not, and the one who decides is left with knowledge. On Sunday, American researchers announced that about 70 percent of women with early-stage breast cancer who have a reduced risk of recurrence of the disease can avoid chemotherapy after removing the tumor.
"This is an important finding, and it means that about XNUMX women in the United States alone will not need chemotherapy," said Dr. Larry Norton, a professor of breast cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who co-organised the government-funded study.

The research, which was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, examined how to treat patients with early cases of breast cancer that respond to hormone therapy.
It is believed that women are at risk of recurrence of the disease based on a genetic scale. Those who score between zero and 26 on this scale are not treated with chemotherapy after the tumor is removed and receive hormonal therapy instead. As for those who score between XNUMX and XNUMX, they receive both chemotherapy and hormonal treatments.
The XNUMX-year study, called "Taylor X", was also published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It included more than XNUMX patients with breast cancer that had not spread to the lymph nodes and who had responded to hormone therapy.
Among the studied sample, 6711 patients believed that the disease could return in the medium term after removing the tumor, and they scored between 11 and 25 points on the genetic scale. And they received only hormonal treatment or hormonal and chemotherapy.
The study showed that all women over the age of fifty who suffer from this type of cancer can dispense with chemotherapy, and this group represented 85 percent of the total sample under study.
In addition, patients aged XNUMX or younger who believe that the disease can recur can avoid chemotherapy with its harmful side effects.
