Is intelligence inherited or is it an acquired trait?

We all think our kids are the smartest, but IQ isn't everything.

The kinds of abilities needed to score well on intelligence tests (verbal and spatial working memory, attention tasks, verbal knowledge, and motor ability) are certainly heritable, as several studies involving identical twins have shown.

The particular brain regions associated with such differences in intellectual function, including the language regions known as Broca's regions, are nearly identical in identical twins. However, this question begs what do we mean by "intelligence". Psychologist Stephen Koslin of Harvard University, in the US, believes that IQ tests measure “the kind of intelligence you need to do well in school, not what you need to succeed in life.” One additional factor that is not included is "emotional intelligence" - awareness of social interactions and people's feelings.
