The death of Walid Al-Moallem, the Syrian foreign minister, and his life path

  • Walid bin Mohi Al-Din Al-Moallem was born on July 17, 1941, in Damascus, and one of the families of Damascus that lived in the Mezzeh neighborhood.
  • He studied in public schools from 1948 to 1960, where he obtained his secondary certificate from Tartous, after which he joined Cairo University and graduated from it in 1963, with a BA in Economics and Political Science.
  • He joined the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1964, and worked in diplomatic missions in Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Spain and England.
  • In 1975, he was appointed as his country's ambassador to Romania until 1980.
  • From 1980 to 1984, he was appointed Director of the Documentation and Translation Department.
  • From 1984 to 1990, he was appointed Director of the Special Offices Department.
  • In 1990, he was appointed ambassador to the United States until 1999, a period during which the Arab-Syrian peace negotiations with Israel took place.
  • In early 2000, he was appointed Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs.
  • On January 9, 2005, he was named Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and was assigned to manage the file of Syrian-Lebanese relations, during an “extremely difficult” period, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry website.
  • He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs on February 11, 2006, and held the position until his death was announced on November 16, 2020.
