In a move toward making space exploration more accessible to everyone, NASA has announced a new streaming service called NASA Plus, set to arrive next week on most major platforms. It's free, with no subscription requirements, and without having to watch ads.

The US space agency hopes to revamp its online presence beyond just NASA's current TV streaming service and its YouTube channel, with the addition of new original content that promises to put the universe at your fingertips.

Service details

The streaming service also maintains NASA TV's tradition of Emmy Award-winning live coverage, such as the landing of the OSIRIS-REx asteroid mission in September, the agency said in announcing the new service.

The new trailer also promoted upcoming space science origins documentaries and specials as family-friendly.

According to a statement issued by NASA, the NASA Plus streaming service is available for free across most major platforms through the NASA application on Android and iOS mobile phones, laptops, and tablets.

Users can also access the service via streaming players, such as Roku, Apple TV and Fire TV, and via web browsers for desktop computers and mobile devices.

The site also integrates existing NASA services such as its Spanish language center NASA en Español, and children's content such as an animated series about NASA's Lucy spacecraft, which explores the Trojan asteroids across Jupiter.

“Tell stories better”

The streaming service serves as the new home for the space agency's past and future documentaries, such as The Color of Space, which tells the inspiring stories of NASA's black astronauts, which premiered in 2022, according to the Arab Technical News Portal.

“We're putting space at your fingertips with NASA's new streaming platform,” Mark Etkind, associate administrator for NASA's Office of Communications, said last July, when NASA Plus was first mentioned.

“Our digital presence helps better tell stories about how the agency explores the unknown in air and space, inspires through discovery, and innovates for the benefit of humanity,” Etkind added.

"Important"

It is noteworthy that the space agency plans to gradually integrate more of its separate sites and multimedia libraries into NASA Plus for an exciting and educational viewing experience.

This means that content from all of the agency's research institutions is available in one place. NASA's chief information officer, Jeff Seaton, summed up the agency's goal by saying: “Our vision is to inspire humanity through a unified, universal web experience.”
