The press mourns its freedom, London acknowledges the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Assange to America

Britain's Home Office announced that Priti Patel had agreed to a US request to extradite Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, who is being pursued by Washington on charges of leaking large amounts of classified documents.

A spokesman for the British Home Office said that the minister "will sign the extradition order in the absence of any reasons preventing its issuance."

Assange has 14 days to appeal the decision.

A Home Office spokesman said: "In this case, the UK courts have not found that Assange's extradition would be oppressive, unjust or a breach of process."

He added that the British courts "did not find that his extradition would not be compatible with his human rights, including his right to a fair trial and freedom of expression, and that while in the United States he would be treated appropriately, including with regard to his health."

The US judiciary is demanding the extradition of Assange for trial on charges of publishing, as of 2010, more than 700 classified documents on US military and diplomatic activities, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. He may be sentenced to 175 years in prison.

Assange was arrested in 2019 after spending more than seven years as a refugee at the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

For its part, WikiLeaks condemned, on Friday, the British Home Office’s decision, considering it a “dark day for press freedom,” and announced that it would appeal the decision.

WikiLeaks wrote on Twitter: "UK Home Secretary (Priti Patel) has agreed to extradite WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange to the United States, where he may face a prison sentence of 175 years."

He added, "It is a dark day for the press and for British democracy, and the decision will be appealed
