Good news for allergies regarding Corona
The results of a new scientific study showed that people who suffer from allergic diseases, such as hay fever, are at lower risk of contracting the Corona virus.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London studied more than 16000 adults in the UK between May 2020 and February 2021, and found that people with hay fever, eczema or dermatitis were 23 percent less likely to contract the virus.
The study showed that 38% of people with asthma were less likely to suffer from infection, even if they used therapeutic inhalers, according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.
Older people and males
Perhaps surprisingly, the researchers found, in contrast to the results of some previous studies, that patients who were older, male, or had other underlying conditions were not at increased risk of infection, except for study participants of Asian descent or those living in large families. .
Professor Adrian Martineau of Queen Mary University explained that the study is based on observation, statistics and comparison and therefore cannot determine the reason behind the results.
He also added that the time period for conducting the research preceded the emergence of SARS-Cove-2 virus variants, such as Delta or Omicron, and therefore it is not known whether allergic conditions protect against new strains.
In addition, the researchers noted that more studies are needed to find out whether people with allergies are less likely to develop infections, and if so, what are the medical reasons.
