Trump's account suspended for two years on Facebook, what is the reason?

Facebook announced on Friday that it had suspended the account of former US President Donald Trump for two years.

The site said that Trump will not be able to return to Facebook until "the dangers that threaten the security of public opinion have disappeared," after he temporarily suspended his account, with an unprecedented decision, on January 7 last for encouraging his supporters during their storming of the Capitol Building in Washington.

“At the end of the two-year period, experts will assess whether the public safety risk has receded,” Nick Clegg, the company's vice president of global affairs, wrote in a blog post on Friday. We will assess external factors, including instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly and other signs of civil unrest.”

For his part, Trump considered, on Friday, that the suspension of his account for two years on Facebook was an “insult” to voters, reiterating that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.

"Facebook's decision is an insult to the 75 million people who voted for us in the fraudulent 2020 presidential election," Trump said in a statement.

“They should not be allowed to get away with this oversight and silencing, and in the end we will win. Our country can no longer tolerate these violations.”

On Wednesday, Facebook's oversight board supported the suspension of Trump's account, but said the company erred when it made the suspension indefinitely and gave it six months to provide an "appropriate response."

Trump called his ban on tech platforms a "complete disgrace." He said companies would "pay a political price".

Ahead of the ban, it was reported on Friday that Facebook, the social media giant, would work to revoke an automatic pass it had given politicians, even if they violated the company's hate speech rules.

According to the Washington Post, the change is part of a series of steps the company's "oversight board" has approved on Trump, and Facebook's response will be "the first major test of how a non-governmental watchdog works to verify the social network."

An informed source, who declined to be identified, said that “since the 2016 presidential election, the company has implemented a political discourse test, balancing the importance of news content with its tendency to cause harm, but now the company will repeal that rule.

He added that "Facebook does not plan to end the merit news exception completely," noting that "in cases where an exception is made, the company will disclose it publicly, and the company will also become more transparent about the system of alerts to people who violate its rules."
